Newborn Session FAQs

Q. When should I schedule the newborn session?
A. As soon as possible. I take a limited number of sessions each month and schedule out months in advance for newborn sessions. Many parents contact me when they are 5 months pregnant. Contact me to get on the schedule. (Do not wait for baby to be born to contact me. Chances are I will not have an opening.)

Q. How old should the baby be for a newborn session?
A. Newborn sessions are done when baby is 4-14 days old. I find that days 6-10 is the sweet spot and try to schedule the session during that age.

Q. Where do you do newborn sessions?
A. All newborn sessions are done at my studio 215 E. Main Street, Suite 101, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin 53590 . Exceptions have been made in the past and I’ve traveled to client’s homes if there are specific circumstances why they are unable to come to the studio.

Q. Where should I park when I arrive at the studio?
A. There is 2-hour street parking in front of the studio on Main Street. If you can’t find a spot or you plan to stay longer than 2 hours, there is a large public parking lot behind the studio. More details and map

Q. How long does a newborn session take?
A. 2-3 hours

Q. Do I have to bring any props to my sessions?
A. I have everything you will need for the session including a wide variety of colored wraps, blankets/backdrops, headbands and hats for newborns. I also have stools, buckets, and chairs for milestone studio sessions. If you have something sentimental that you would like to include, I encourage you to bring it along and I will try my best to incorporate it into the session.

Q. Is there anything special I have to do to prepare me and/or my baby for the newborn session?
A. A newborn session prep guide is emailed to you one week before your session. This guide gives you all the information you need regarding the session from what to wear, how to get those sleepy baby poses and what is expected for siblings. You will also receive a questionnaire to be completed two days before the session to make sure the session is styled to your liking.

Q. When is the best time to do a maternity session?
A. I recommend 32-36 weeks but I understand every pregnancy is different and leave it up to the mother’s desecration.

Q. What is the best age to photograph baby milestones?
A. I recommend doing milestone sessions at 4, 7/8, and 12 months. My milestone package is flexible to work with these ages rather then the standard 3, 6, 9, 12 month sessions. Waiting an extra month helps solidify their milestone and you are able to get more consistent images.

  • 4 months = Smiles and head control for tummy time
  • 7 months = Sitting and lots of smiles/laughs
  • 12 months = Standing and possible walking

On Location Session FAQs

Q. What time of the day do you do sessions outside?
A. I avoid mid-day outdoor sessions. Best time is as early in the morning as you can do or 2 hours before sunset. I realize these times aren’t always doable for families and work with each client to select the best time for their session. Check out my blog for a side-by-side comparison of a mid-day session vs a golden hour session.

Q. Can we bring our dog?
A. Yes! Some locations do not allow dogs so please let me know you plan on bringing your dog so we can make sure the location is pet friendly.

Smash Cake Session FAQ

Q. Is a smash cake session considered a short or standard session?
A. Depends. If you are looking for 1 setup, 1 outfit and the main focus to be the actual smashing of the cake, that would be a short session. If you are looking for 1-2 other backgrounds besides what is used for the smash cake set-up, want a second outfit and/or a few family photos, this would be a standard session.

Q. Do you supply the cake?
A. No. I offer recommendations on cake type and style but do not include the cake in the session fee.

Q. What are dos and don’ts when ordering a smash cake?
A. Avoid red and black frosting. Many times less is more when it comes to the design, but it depends on what your theme is. Whipped cream frosting is a great frosting if you want messy pictures. The softness of the frosting makes is super easy to spread around. If using buttercream, make sure the cake is out of the refrigerator for a couple hours before the session so it had time to soften up.

Q. Best and cheapest place to get a smash cake?
A. Hyvee makes a small smash cake for $10 or less and it’s super cute.

Q. What do you supply for the smash cake session?
A. I have some regular latex balloon options that can be filled with helium or with regular air to lay on the floor. Banners, poms, and all other decorations should be planned ahead and brought to your session. Rachel will walk through plans of the set-up to make sure everything is accounted for.

Q. When is the best time to do a smash cake session?
A. Many people do the session 3 weeks before a birthday party so they have time to receive the digital gallery and print photos for the party. If the photos won’t be used for a party, having the session closer to the 1 year old’s birthday would work well so they have a few more weeks to advance their skills and personality.

Q. Are siblings included in smash cake session?
A. Typically no but exceptions have been made to allow siblings in at the end to help snack on the cake at the very end.

Q. How does the child get clean after making a mess with their cake?
A. All smash cake sessions include a “splash” session which is a quick 5-10 minute bubble bath in the studio. It’s a great time to get the child clean and at the same time clean them up. Bubble bath, towels and washcloths are all provided by Rachel.
